Roena Green

Roena Thomas Green, was born on March 3, 1925 to the late Mae Lossie Whitaker and Phillip Montgomery in Edgecombe County. On the evening of Monday, December 19, 2016, she passed away at Vidant Edgecombe Hospital in Tarboro, North Carolina. Roena was 91 years old. Roena met and married Arthur Lee Greene and out of that union they had 10 children. Her husband and two children, Johnny Ray Green and Pauline Green preceded her in death. Roena attended Edgecombe County Public Schools for four (4) years and received a High School Diploma. After graduation, she attended Edgecombe Technical College and received credits towards a Social Worker Diploma. In her early years, she did farm work. She was later employed by Phillips Fibers Company in Rocky Mount. After leaving Phillips Fibers, she was employed at Polylok Corporation, and later at Westgate Nursing Center of Tarboro, NC as a Certified Nursing Assistant and Geriatric Nursing Assistant. She was later trained to become a Physical Therapist Assistant. In all of her educational endeavors she was top of her class. October 14, 1978, Roena dedicated her life to Jehovah and was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses. She enjoyed sharing her love of the Bible with those she met and supported theocratic activities such as the Kingdom Hall remodel and Auxiliary Pioneering. The Bible was her most favorite book to read. Despite health conditions Roena faithfully endured to the end. Roena was a very “in charge” person and very smart about life. She knew something about almost everything; even sports. She knew all the rules of the games she attended with her children and watched on TV. Tennis was one of her favorite sports. Roena loved to play the game “Trouble” and Checkers while at the same time entertaining her opponents. She was always up for a challenge. She was also a confidant to many. She leaves to cherish her memory five daughters, DeLois Hamilton of Baltimore, MD; Erma Exum of Tarboro, NC; Viola Birth (Cornelius) of Battleboro, NC; Angela Baker (Paul) of Irving, TX; and Anita Davis of the home. Three sons, Arthur Greene (Adell) of Rocky Mount, NC; Alfred Greene of Baltimore, MD; and Jesse Green (Lucy) of Lexington, NC. Three sisters, Odell Jenkins and Catherine Braswell both of Rocky Mount, NC; and Allene Harrison (Benjamin) of Whitakers, NC; Two brothers, John Thomas (Carrie) of Rocky Mount, NC; Joseph Harrison of Goldsboro, NC; a host of grandchildren including Ashley Davis of the home, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
